AMD is buying World Labs for $8.2bn, and Fei-Fei Li becomes its chief scientist

$8.2bnall stock, AMD's second largest deal after Xilinx

AMD sells silicon. On 28 September it spent $8.2bn of its own stock on a company that makes none, and gave its founder the title of chief scientist.

AMD agreed to buy World Labs, founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all stock deal expected to close by the end of the year. Li, who built ImageNet, the dataset that started the deep learning era, becomes executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Lisa Su. World Labs works on spatial intelligence: models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video, and the machinery for robots to learn inside them. At $8.2bn it is AMD's second largest acquisition ever, behind only the roughly $50bn it paid for Xilinx in 2022.

Why this one is different

Chip companies buy chip companies, or the software that makes their chips easier to program. This is a chip company buying a research group whose output is worlds, and installing its founder above its own engineering as chief scientist. The logic is about what comes next: if the expensive workloads of the next decade are robots and simulation rather than chat, the company that owns the models defining those workloads gets to shape the hardware they run on. Nvidia has made that argument for three years while selling the hardware. AMD has now bought the argument.

A silicon company just hired the world's most cited vision researcher to run science.

  4. 28 Sep 2026AMD buys World Labs for $8.2bn and makes Fei-Fei Li its chief scientist.

What it does and does not mean

No product was announced. There is no World Labs model on an AMD roadmap, no date, and no stated plan for how spatial models and Instinct accelerators meet. Acquisitions of research groups have a poor record of surviving contact with a hardware company's quarterly rhythm, and the people are the asset in a way a foundry is not. What the deal does prove is where the competition has moved. Three weeks after Nvidia bought the place open models are distributed, AMD bought the people who define what the next generation of models is for, and both companies paid in stock rather than in silicon.
