Anthropic gave Agent Skills to the Linux Foundation, name, logo and domain included

280mskills installed since the format launched a year ago

Anthropic gave away the name and the logo. A company can keep control of an open standard for years by keeping its trademark, and Anthropic handed over the specification, the name, the logo, the GitHub organisation and the agentskills.io domain in one donation.

The recipient is the Agentic AI Foundation, formed under the Linux Foundation in December 2025 by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, with MCP, Block's goose and OpenAI's AGENTS.md as its founding projects. Agent Skills is the fourth. A skill is a folder: instructions, scripts and resources an agent loads when it needs them. Anthropic launched the format in October 2025 and published the specification that December. Since then more than 70 agent platforms have adopted it, among them ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. 1 million skills published, nearly 280 million installed. The named lead maintainers are David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag, and engineers from Google and OpenAI join them as individuals rather than as company representatives, which is how Linux Foundation projects are normally governed.

Why this one is different

MCP went the same way and that is the point: this is now a pattern rather than a gesture. The thing being given away is the format a competitor's agent has to read, and the reason to give it away is that a format nobody else trusts is not a format. Keeping the trademark is the usual hedge, and it is the specific thing Anthropic did not keep. ChatGPT reads a format OpenAI did not write and Anthropic no longer owns. That sentence is what the donation buys.

The standard, the name, the logo and the domain, all of it.

How we got here

  1. Oct 2025Anthropic launches Agent Skills.
  2. Dec 2025The Agentic AI Foundation is formed under the Linux Foundation, with MCP, goose and AGENTS.md.
  3. Dec 2025Anthropic publishes the Agent Skills specification.
  4. 22 Oct 2026Agent Skills is donated, trademark and domain included.

What it does and does not mean

A donation is governance, not adoption. Seventy platforms had already shipped support before the trademark moved, so the standard was winning on its own and the Foundation inherits something that works rather than something that needs rescuing. The install count is the shakiest figure here, because installs are not uses and Anthropic is the only party counting. What is now settled is who can say no: nobody can be stopped from calling their folder a skill, and the three biggest agent vendors are maintaining the same spec in the same room.
